Florida Rights Restoration Coalition Commemorates 5th Anniversary w/ a special Celebration & Will be Honored by the Orlando Magic

ORLANDO, FLNovember 2, 2023 —  The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition is excited to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the passing of Amendment 4, the constitutional amendment campaign that restored voting rights for 1.4 million people with felony convictions in Florida in 2018. Executive Director Desmond Meade led the grassroots movement, where the group gathered more than 700,000 signatures to help get the initiative on the ballot on November 6, 2018. Amendment 4 went into effect on January 8, 2019. FRRC will hold a special celebration at its headquarters on Monday, November 6, 2023, to commemorate the special day.

This celebration is even more special as FRRC’s Deputy Director will be honored at the Orlando Magic’s Civic Engagement Game Night on Monday, November 6. Deputy Director Neil Volz will receive the Orlando Magic Diversity Game Changer award for his hard work, dedication, and work with FRRC. The Orlando Magic has been a longtime supporter of FRRC, so it is an honor for our Deputy Director to get this award on the fifth anniversary.

“Amendment 4 changed how we see ourselves as returning citizens and how society sees us and treats us, and for that, I’m forever grateful,” said Neil Volz, FRRC Deputy Director.

Amendment 4 represented the most significant expansion of voting rights in the United States in half a century and brought an end to 150 years of a Jim Crow-era law in Florida. Since then, the organization has passed numerous pieces of legislation to help advance the work of returning citizens. In July, FRRC filed a major federal lawsuit alleging that Florida officials have failed to live up to their responsibilities to ensure election integrity in the state.

“It feels just like yesterday that love won the day. The people of Florida chose to do something different than they had done. People from all walks of life voted to pass Amendment 4. Our work continues as we seek to live up to the promise of Amendment 4,” said FRRC Executive Director Desmond Meade.

On Monday, November 6, 2023, FRRC will hold a special celebration at its headquarters to commemorate the 5th anniversary with a special cake cutting followed by FRRC leaders providing announcements on all the work we’ve done to live up to the promise of Amendment 4.
